Arturo Fuentes, musica original, guión y dirección. Con Mariana Hijar, Rosario Ochoa y Don Saulo Vidal. Enero 2025.

El compositor mexicano Julián Carrillo (1875–1965) fue un artista de personalidad compleja que logró integrar música y política a lo largo de su vida.

Nacido en Ahualulco del Sonido 13, un pequeño pueblo enclavado en una región semidesértica de San Luis Potosí, Carrillo encontró en su entorno la inspiración que daría forma a su legado más célebre: La teoría del Sonido 13. El Sonido 13 es la subdivisión de la escala tonal en tonos más pequeños llamados microtonos.

Ahualulco del Sonido 13 resguarda las raíces de lo que Carrillo escuchó y vivió. Regresamos a este pueblo siguiendo las pistas sobre los orígenes de su fantasía creativa y su capacidad para romper paradigmas.

La lentezza del single - premiere for oboe

This is a new work dedicated to the oboist Vicente Moronta. It will be premiered in a series of concerts in Switzerland and France. The use of multiphonics that fades into the rhythms, creates a cacophony of colors and a sometimes nervous and sometimes contemplative dramaturgy.

HEAVY at the 3rd. Zurich Saxfest

Lars Mlekusch and his saxophone ensemble Zürich saxophone collektive / ZHdK Studierende presented HEAVY, composed in 2015, at the 3rd. Zurich Saxfest (14 April 2024). 

Between stridencies and jazz orchestrations in the style of the nouvelle vague films of the 60's, HEAVY emerges: a work that projects an apparently improvised sound energy, where the saxophone orchestra takes center stage​.

RIMINI new piece for sax and piano
​
I am living for the next 5 months in Rimini, Italy. I needed some time alone, just to compose, I have an apartment in the historical center of the city. I live near the Adriatic Sea, every day I go for walks and come back to compose. This work is the first of this year and is part of several premieres scheduled in the following months.

PICADO for ensemble at the Wiener Konzert Haus

I am thrilled to announce my return to one of my favorite venues in Vienna, the Wiener Konzert Haus. This time, an exceptional program will be presented in the company of talented friends and composers. We will feature performances by one of Austria's most iconic ensembles, ENSEMBLE XXI. JAHRHUNDERT under the direction of the renowned Peter Burwik.

​It is also interesting to note that my work PICADO is from 2008, and we return to the discussion in the contemporary music milieu about the fact that works are often performed only once. It is always a pleasure that musicians, directors and festival programmers look at composers' past works, which still have life and can give much in the future. ​

Toro Mariposa - PREMIERE IN MEXICO
for recorder sopranino and sountrack

Anna Margules has performed this work a dozen times since its creation in 2008 and now it will have its premiere in Mexico (5th August 2023, Diferencial Festival). "Toro Mariposa" is the title of an engraving by Francisco de Goya that inspired me to compose it. As its name suggests, this composition fuses lightness and agility with strength and precision, represented by two apparently opposing figures: a bull and a butterfly.

​This is my latest piece for saxophone and ensemble, premiered at the Haus der Musik in Innsbruck (11 May 2023). Andreas Mader played the solo saxophone and the Windkraft Ensemble was conducted by Kasper de Roo.

DECONSTRUCTING BEAUTY
Have you ever wondered what beauty is and where it originates from? As Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges said: "An afternoon, a twilight, a shadow wants to tell us something; the fact that we cannot express it in words is perhaps the aesthetic fact." In other words, beauty is difficult to define with words, yet it is something that we can all feel and admire. In fact, beauty is a concept that serves as a connector to understand the world around us, a bridge between our mind, our feelings, and reality. Like music, we do not need to define beauty to enjoy and appreciate it. In this talk, we will explore the origin of beauty and how we construct it through our experience. Join me on this journey to deconstruct beauty and discover what it truly means to us.

PLEXUS for sax and electronics
American premiere

The piece "PLEXUS" was composed in 2009 and is one of the most performed works in Fuentes' catalog. It was originally premiered at the acoustic dome of the KUBUS in Karlsruhe.

Now, it will be presented in Texas at a concert by the New Music New Mexico ensemble, conducted by composer José Luis Hurtado and featuring saxophonist Edwin Anthony.

I am now in the process of creating a new composition for saxophone and ensemble, which is dedicated to Andreas Mader and the Windkraft Ensemble. The piece is scheduled to be performed in Innsbruck in May.
​
​Wind instruments, and particularly the saxophone, possess a unique quality of sound that I would define as "spoken". This phonetic characteristic of the saxophone connects music with our perception of language, which I explore in my works as a psychoacoustic element. Air, voice, words, and guttural sounds are like the multifaceted voice of a character enclosed in a "sonic poem", which I use to create an expressive auditory experience.

Once again, the notion of water returns to my palette of sounds. The fluid noise carves out its own path. I employ a metaphor here that encapsulates a way of thinking about music, composing it, and interpreting it: deciphering the world sonically. Through this "acoustic logic," I interpret, translate, and assign new categories to the forms and things that I experience, and the score is the "calm" (a space) where this logic is translated into sounds. The delicate sound of the saxophone keys, creating percussion, blends with the injected air, inventing a column of sounds on the immovable axis of time, an allegory of the South in the sea of Spain. AF

Arturo Fuentes

Over the course of the past two decades, Arturo Fuentes (an Austrian citizen born in Mexico in 1975) has created a highly diverse catalog of over one hundred works. In recent years, he has ventured into creating scenography and directing his own music theater projects, such as the opera-monodrama Carlota (2018), which was dedicated to Sarah Maria Sun and the Klangforum Wien. His catalog includes chamber, vocal, and orchestral music, as well as mixed works with electronics and electroacoustic pieces, staged concerts, dance performances, and short films that he has directed and produced.
