POÈME MAUDIT

for an extended guitar quartet and vocal ensemble

Poème Maudit is a stage concept in which guitars expand themselves, soaring over a labyrinthine sound space, as if it were a thousand-faced figure. Guitars are, to me, musical instruments with myriad possibilities, and they perfectly fit into my current axis of both auditory and performance exploration: on one hand they have qualities such as a microtonal, malleable, agile, resonant, percussive, spectral, rhythmic, harmonic and melodic sounds, but on the other hand, they also have the possibility of being intervened – such as a prepared piano - by adding objects on to its strings and on to its wooden bodies. Therefore, in this piece, not only we discover the expanded guitar but we also create a performance out of this game: the audience is involved in this creative process by being placed in the midst of 12 guitars and some other glass instruments, not in a conventional concert-hall formation, but spread out throughout the space, inside a peculiar atmosphere.

Steering this ship, is the virtuosic Aleph Gitarrenquartett. They function as a heart pumping, releasing our initial sounds from the center of the space, and generating the first sound impulses and waves that will propagate towards 28 additional performers. Some of them, spread out across the space, will play by pulling the extensions attached to the guitar strings; others will play microtone-tuned wine glasses tuned to the specific tuningof the guitars; and finally, some will modify the sounds of the composition by manipulating objects placed on top of the guitar strings. This will result of a sound ecosystem, in which each body is dependent on the others, as a whole jungle is dependent on all its microorganisms. Therefore, for over an hour, we experience being inside a heterogeneous sonic space that wouldn’t stop vibrating.

Poème Maudit ist ein Bühnenkonzept, bei dem sich die Gitarre ausdehnt und über einem labyrinthischen Klangraum schwebt, als wäre sie eine Figur mit tausend Gesichtern. Für Fuentes ist die Gitarre ein Instrument mit unzähligen Möglichkeiten, das sich sehr gut in seine Erforschung des Auditiven und Szenischen einfügt: mikrotonal, agil, resonant, perkussiv, spektral, rhythmisch, harmonisch und melodisch. Außerdem mit der Möglichkeit (wie beim Klavier) sie zu präparieren, indem Objekte an den Saiten und am Korpus angebracht werden: Wir entdecken die „erweiterte“ Gitarre.

Dieses Klangschiff wird vom virtuosem ALEPH Gitarrenquartett gesteuert. Es fungiert als Herzschlag und sendet die ersten Klangimpulse vom Zentrum aus und erzeugt Wellen, die sich zu den 28 im Konzertsaal verteilten zusätzlichen Interpreten ausbreiten.
Einige ziehen an den „Extensions“ (Verlängerungen), die an den Gitarrensaiten angebracht sind, andere spielen mit mikrotonal gestimmten Weingläsern, die auf die jeweilige Stimmung der Gitarren abgestimmt sind; und schließlich werden einige der Instrumente mit diversen Objekten präpariert. Das Ergebnis ist ein „Klang-Ökosystem“, bei dem jeder Körper von den anderen abhängig ist.

En Poème Maudit Arturo Fuentes crea un concepto escénico donde la guitarra se expande, sobrevolando un espacio sonoro laberíntico, como si ella fuera una figura de mil caras. La guitarra es, para Fuentes, un instrumento múltiple que encaja perfectamente en los ejes actuales de la exploración auditiva y escénica: microtonal, ágil, resonante, percusiva, espectral, rítmica, harmónica y melódica, y con la posibilidad de ser intervenida como si fuese un piano preparado, añadiendo objetos en sus cuerdas y en su cuerpo de madera. En este espectáculo descubrimos la guitarra expandiday, al mando de esta nave sonora, encontramos al Aleph Gitarrenquartett.

Como un corazón que bombea la sangre, el cuarteto de guitarras lanza los primeros impulsos sonoros y genera las ondas que se propagan en los 28 intérpretes repartidos en la sala de concierto. Algunos tiran de las extensiones añadidas a las cuerdas de la guitarra, otros tocan copas afinadas en microtonos, que corresponden con la afinación especial de las guitarras; y finalmente encontramos los intérpretes que modifican la guitarra con objetos en sus cuerdas. El resultado es un ecosistema sonoro donde un cuerpo depende del otro. Nos adentramos en una selva de microorganismos. Por más de una hora, estamos adentro de un espacio sonoro que no deja de vibrar.
