Tournée in Mexico of Bordeaux Ensemble Proxima Centauri
​A new piece composed for the Bordeaux ensemble will be premiered in October in several concerts in Mexico (Monterrey, Puebla and Mexico City) and in November in France. 

Spanish pianist Neus Estarellas premieres DELIRIOS MELANCÓLICOS
This new piece by the Mallorcan pianist will be premiered at the Festival Musica UNAM on 3 October. The programme includes pieces by Erika Vega, Mateu Malondra and John Cage.

Vicente Moronta is a very active oboist, in his concert programme Songs of reeds he will premiere a new work in several cities in Switzerland and in Caracas.

Poland, accordeonist Ander Tellería premieres FADO
This is the first collaboration with the great Spanish accordionist Ander Tellería, premiering a new work for his mesotonic-tuned instrument.

​USA, new piece for alto saxophone and piano
​The saxophonist Andres E. Santana, based in the USA, will perform and record in a new CD production the work RIMINI for saxophone and piano. 

YINN for bass flute will be premiered in Japan
Japanese premiere of this piece for solo flute, which mixes percussive and aerial sonorities, at the Cabinet of Curiosities concert series in Tokyo.

St. Petersburg, Russia, Reheard Ensemble premiere
Atlantic Vortex 2 is a piece for flute and violin, which will have its Russian premiere in November. A piece born from a process of improvisation with a very rhythmic approach.

Karyme Larrea "unplugged" at Festival Cultura UNAM
This is a collaboration with the pop singer from Querétaro, Mexico and El Hormiguero Studio to create three pieces that will be broadcast on TV UNAM and other cable services.

Parisian premiere of La lenteza del single
We return to this city with a performance of this work for solo oboe dedicated to Vicente Moronta.

HEAVY at the 3rd. Zurich Saxfest

Lars Mlekusch and his saxophone ensemble Zürich saxophone collektive / ZHdK Studierende presented HEAVY, composed in 2015, at the 3rd. Zurich Saxfest (14 April 2024). 

Between stridencies and jazz orchestrations in the style of the nouvelle vague films of the 60's, HEAVY emerges: a work that projects an apparently improvised sound energy, where the saxophone orchestra takes center stage​.

RIMINI new piece for sax and piano

I am living for the next 5 months in Rimini, Italy. I needed some time alone, just to compose, I have an apartment in the historical center of the city. I live near the Adriatic Sea, every day I go for walks and come back to compose. This work is the first of this year and is part of several premieres scheduled in the following months.

PICADO for ensemble at the Wiener Konzert Haus

I am thrilled to announce my return to one of my favorite venues in Vienna, the Wiener Konzert Haus. This time, an exceptional program will be presented in the company of talented friends and composers. We will feature performances by one of Austria's most iconic ensembles, ENSEMBLE XXI. JAHRHUNDERT under the direction of the renowned Peter Burwik.

​It is also interesting to note that my work PICADO is from 2008, and we return to the discussion in the contemporary music milieu about the fact that works are often performed only once. It is always a pleasure that musicians, directors and festival programmers look at composers' past works, which still have life and can give much in the future. ​
Toro Mariposa - PREMIERE IN MEXICO
for recorder sopranino and sountrack

Anna Margules has performed this work a dozen times since its creation in 2008 and now it will have its premiere in Mexico (5th August 2023, Diferencial Festival). "Toro Mariposa" is the title of an engraving by Francisco de Goya that inspired me to compose it. As its name suggests, this composition fuses lightness and agility with strength and precision, represented by two apparently opposing figures: a bull and a butterfly.

​This is my latest piece for saxophone and ensemble, premiered at the Haus der Musik in Innsbruck (11 May 2023). Andreas Mader played the solo saxophone and the Windkraft Ensemble was conducted by Kasper de Roo.

As Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges said: "An afternoon, a twilight, a shadow wants to tell us something; the fact that we cannot express it in words is perhaps the aesthetic fact." In other words, beauty is difficult to define with words, yet it is something that we can all feel and admire. In fact, beauty is a concept that serves as a connector to understand the world around us, a bridge between our mind, our feelings, and reality. Like music, we do not need to define beauty to enjoy and appreciate it. In this talk, we will explore the origin of beauty and how we construct it through our experience. Join me on this journey to deconstruct beauty and discover what it truly means to us.

PLEXUS for sax and electronics
American premiere

The piece "PLEXUS" was composed in 2009 and is one of the most performed works in Fuentes' catalog. It was originally premiered at the acoustic dome of the KUBUS in Karlsruhe.

Now, it will be presented in Texas at a concert by the New Music New Mexico ensemble, conducted by composer José Luis Hurtado and featuring saxophonist Edwin Anthony.

I am now in the process of creating a new composition for saxophone and ensemble, which is dedicated to Andreas Mader and the Windkraft Ensemble. The piece is scheduled to be performed in Innsbruck in May.

​Wind instruments, and particularly the saxophone, possess a unique quality of sound that I would define as "spoken". This phonetic characteristic of the saxophone connects music with our perception of language, which I explore in my works as a psychoacoustic element. Air, voice, words, and guttural sounds are like the multifaceted voice of a character enclosed in a "sonic poem", which I use to create an expressive auditory experience.

Once again, the notion of water returns to my palette of sounds. The fluid noise carves out its own path. I employ a metaphor here that encapsulates a way of thinking about music, composing it, and interpreting it: deciphering the world sonically. Through this "acoustic logic," I interpret, translate, and assign new categories to the forms and things that I experience, and the score is the "calm" (a space) where this logic is translated into sounds. The delicate sound of the saxophone keys, creating percussion, blends with the injected air, inventing a column of sounds on the immovable axis of time, an allegory of the South in the sea of Spain. AF

Atlantic Vortex cycle (2 new pieces)
I have been recording two new pieces for flute and violin as part of my "Atlantic Vortex" cycle, where I delve into improvisation with instruments that I don't play professionally (as I am primarily a guitarist). The goal is to capture a finished piece in a single recording take, usually lasting between three and five minutes. Then, I transcribe the score directly from this recording. The creative process behind this approach aims to keep the "inner drive" free of conscious will, while still being limited by a context (such as a specific technique, rhythm, or effect). I should mention that I rehearse extensively and explore the instrument before the recording session. This method of composition allows me to uncover new dramaturgies in my music that might otherwise have gone unnoticed, as well as to generate new sounds and effects that I can integrate into future works. It's an exercise in intuition.

Cegueira (2021)
The new trailer directed by Arturo Fuentes for the show Cegueira (Blindness) has just come out. Based on the homonymous book by the Portuguese writer José Saramago (Nobel Prize winner), this show will be presented in Portugal by the Drumming Percussion Group, directed by Miquel Bernat. The staging of this music theatre is in the hands of Arturo Fuentes: a psychological drama in a pandemic time with white blindness, like a sea of milk, where the eyes of everybody seems healthy but only a woman can see (the main role in the show). Saramago expresses his critic point of view about humankind into a pandemic catastrophe: “I don't think we did go blind, I think we are blind, Blind but seeing, Blind people who can see, but do not see.”   Visit the YouTube link

Ader (2021)
The last work for solo accordion that Arturo Fuentes wrote was in 2011. This new piece is dedicated to the great accordionist Krassimir Sterev (Klangforum Wien). Fuentes is inspired by the infinite networks of veins, as if they were ramifications of sounds. The piece has had the support of the Austrian government for its composition.

Carrillo y la micro belleza (2021)
Julián Carrillo is a Mexican composer who died in 1965 at the age of 90, he was one of the pioneers of microtonalism at the beginning of the 20th century. His life is full of fantasy and mysticism. He was born in Ahualulco, a town in the middle of the desert, in the state of San Luis Potosí. However, he created a revolutionary theory and commissioned the construction of 16 microtonal pianos in Germany, which are a cornerstone of his research. Arturo Fuentes composes a work for these pianos, which are in the Carrillo Museum, and directs a documentary on the life of this composer. This project is supported by the UNAM and the Secretary of Culture of SLP and will have its premiere in July 2021.

Carrillo - Retorno a Ahualulco. Documental (2021)
The teaser for this documentary has just been released. The desert spaces form the scenery of the life of this Mexican composer, full of contradictions and owner of unlimited creativity that led him to create his own microtonal theory at the beginning of the 20th century. A life that moves between politics, contacts with intellectuals and artists, and his town located in the desert, which he visited every now and then. An unknown character in Mexican musical culture, which the public will discover in this production.

Poeta en Nueva York (song cycle for soprano and piano)
The Spanish poet Federico García Lorca was 32 years old when he traveled to New York (1929/1930), an almost initiatory journey where he would rediscover himself. The economic depression of 1929 definitely affected his poetic making, as well as the bigger picture of New York, the skyscrapers, the slums, and the Big Apple movement. Lorca was assassinated during the Franco regime, he was only 38 years old (1936). "Poet in New York" was published in Mexico and the United States in 1940. 

Arturo Fuentes has collaborated with the soprano Sarah Maria Sun and the pianist Alberto Rosado in the creation of several projects. On this occasion, Fuentes brings these two unique musicians together and dedicates the song cycle "Poet in New York" to them. The piece "Vuelta de paseo" (Walk back), which is the first poem in Federico García Lorca's book, has already been composed. The full hour-long cycle is scheduled for the end of 2021.

Over the course of the past two decades, Arturo Fuentes (an Austrian citizen born in Mexico in 1975) has created a highly diverse catalog of over one hundred works. In recent years, he has ventured into creating scenography and directing his own music theater projects, such as the opera-monodrama Carlota (2018), which was dedicated to Sarah Maria Sun and the Klangforum Wien. His catalog includes chamber, vocal, and orchestral music, as well as mixed works with electronics and electroacoustic pieces, staged concerts, dance performances, and short films that he has directed and produced.
